Chapter 23

“After I gave you all that time to catch your breath and fix your hair, you came at me while I was distracted!” Lilly called out, indignant but not truly angry. She held up her mug of wine and reached over me to clink it against Haether’s, “Remind me to keep an eye on you at all times,” she said, squinting.

After the fights were over, we changed our clothes and washed all the dirt off ourselves before heading to one of the taverns on campus, The Stiff Wand. I sat in a cushioned booth between the girls, sipping a tankard of mead that was surprisingly sweet, while Andrith and Whelan sat across from us.

“Hey, if you think she fights dirty, you don’t want to go up against an Earth elemental!” Whelan added, slamming the side of his fist into Andrith’s shoulder. “I’m still picking dirt out of my teeth, thanks to this guy.” Haether looked extremely satisfied at that.

“Hey, even I didn’t cheat. That move with the dirt was perfectly legal. What I did for Jake, on the other hand,” Andrith let his voice trail off and he smirked. “Haether knew just when to do it too, it was like she was reading your mind.”

I gave an awkward laugh. He had no idea how close to the truth he actually was. “I guess that’s what happens you spend so much time together. Besides, if anyone deserved to be cheated against, it was Boba.” No one could disagree with that.

We spent the night drinking and discussing the other fights. I had paid extra attention to the ones that involved the members of my History class, but barely watched most others.

April beat her sister, August, quite easily. The Nature Elemental was clearly the more serious and skilled of the two fighters, despite seeming a bit ditsy when we met.

Brim lost his match quickly, and I got the sense that he would definitely make a better historian than archeologist.

Jessie put on a better show, but also lost to her larger opponent, while Erliah won one of the most exciting matches of the day. The orc woman was paired up with a guy I didn’t recognize, and it took her no time at all to twist his arm into an unnatural position, forcing him to submit.

The previous night’s events, my conversation with Poultice where I learned that she was a Shadow, returned to my mind as I walked back to Haether’s apartment with her and Lilly. We were all a bit drunk. Too much to walk in a straight line, but not quite enough to fall over. Something about the darkness periodically broken by the odd streetlamps reminded me of the basement and the news I had yet to share with the girls.

“Oh!” I exclaimed as it came to me. One of my hands rested on Lilly’s shoulder as she led the way. “I got us approved for that field trip I mentioned.”

Haether didn’t seem to hear me, she kept looking up at the stars while she stumbled down the path.
